Tom Savage will be the Houston Texans starting quarterback as the team makes their preseason debut Wednesday against the Carolina Panthers, head coach Bill O’Brien told John McClain of The Houston Chronicle.

Savage has been in a quarterback competition with first-round pick Deshaun Watson through training camp. Watson, along with third stringer Brandon Weeden, will also play in the game.

“Tom’s going to start the game,” O’Brien said. “Deshaun and Brandon will play.”

O’Brien said the pace of the game will determine how much each quarterback plays. He’s not putting high expectations on the offense’s production in their first preseason outing.

“Good operation of the offense,” O’Brien said about what he hopes to see from the offense. “Take care of the football. Getting in and out of the huddle quickly. From all three of them, just a clean game, a clean operation. Everybody on the same page, and see if we can score some points.”
