The NFL has hired former San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke, who was fired last season, as a football operations consultant, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Baalke’s role appears to have little focus as he will advise on game-related matters, officiating video review, player development and evaluation, according to Schefter.

Prior to accepting his position as vice president of football operations with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tom Coughlin served in a similar role as NFL senior adviser to football operations in 2016. It is unclear if Baalke is explicitly replacing Coughlin.

Baalke was a member of the 49ers’ front office from 2005 to 2016, serving as GM for the last five years of his tenure. He has been largely credited with driving Jim Harbaugh away from the organization and having poor communication with his head coaches in general. He was fired before the 2016 season ended.
