The Baltimore Ravens showed no panic when quarterback Joe Flacco declared he’d be out at least a week of camp with a back problem. They would just move backup Ryan Mallett up to play with the first team and sign a former arena league quarterback David Olson.

They may be worried now after one day with Mallett at the helm. The journeyman quarterback had a day to forget on Friday, as described by ESPN’s Jamison Hensley:

The backup quarterback looked awful in filling in for Joe Flacco with the first team on Friday. He was intercepted at least five times and was nearly picked off two more times.

On his last interception, Mallett threw his white towel in the air. His struggles were noticed by linebacker Terrell Suggs.

“Hey Marty (Mornhinweg, offensive coordinator), tell Mallett to throw to the guys wearing purple jerseys (the offense),” Suggs said.

Before signing Olson, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh told reporters he had been in contact with free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick this summer.
