“Game of Thrones” returns to the small screen Sunday night, which has several NFL players buzzing along with the millions of other fans of HBO’s hit show.

One such player is New England Patriots wideout Julian Edelman, who tweeted a photo Sunday afternoon that featured the banner of House Stark (that’s the one with Jon, Arya, Sansa, etc.) hanging on Winterfell, only instead of the Stark sigil there is a Patriots-inspired logo.

But wait… are the Patriots really the Starks of the NFL? It seems like a stretch for several reasons.

First, the Patriots can hardly claim to be the NFL’s northern team. They play in the AFC East and within their own division there is another team, the Buffalo Bills, that can claim far more domain over the world of ice and snow. So could NFC teams like the Green Bay Packers.

Many fans will also bristle at the idea that the Patriots are the “good guys” (as the Starks mostly are on GOT, though everything on that show is a shade of grey). If anything, the Patriots seem more like the Lannisters. They don’t always use scrupulous means, but they always end up on top.

In fact, even author George R.R. Martin (famously a New York Jets fan) has said the Patriots are the NFL’s Lannisters.
