New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton revealed Thursday that defensive tackle Nick Fairley has had two medical opinions on his heart and the first told him he shouldn’t play football again, according to Josh Katzenstein from The Times-Picayune.

Fairley has been absent from OTAs as he tends to a medical condition involving his heart.

Payton said all parties involved are waiting to hear a third opinion.

“The most important thing is his well-being,” Payton said, per Katzenstein.

If Fairley is ultimately given clearance, Payton said he wants to make sure he’s playing with full confidence in his heart, reports Larry Holder from NOLA.com. A final decision has yet to be made on Fairley’s playing career.

The heart condition was discovered during pre-draft testing, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Fairley still managed to play six seasons and rack up 20.5 sacks with the Saints, Detroit Lions, and then-St. Louis Rams.
