Chicago Bears wide receiver Cameron Meredith will be forced to sit out the remainder of OTAs after suffering a thumb ligament injury in practice Thursday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports, citing sources.

Missing valuable reps during the spring schedule stands as a minor setback for the promising young pass-catcher, but Schefter adds that Meredith expects to be ready for training camp.

Indeed, making his return at some point over the summer and being at full strength for the preseason would go a long way toward helping him lock down a role in replacing Alshon Jeffery as Chicago’s No. 1 wideout.

Meredith was a bright spot for the Bears’ offense in 2016, enjoying a breakout sophomore season with 66 receptions for 888 yards and four touchdowns.

Among those also competing for snaps in a crowded Bears receiver group are Kevin White, Markus Wheaton, Kendall Wright, Victor Cruz, and Josh Bellamy.
