Jared Goff‘s NFL career got off to the worst possible start: He struggled through his rookie year, failed to win a single game, and his head coach got fired.

Those issues arguably started during the offseason prior. There were widespread reports of Goff’s problems acclimating to the Los Angeles Rams‘ offense, and the then-rookie was unable to beat out Case Keenum for the starting job.

However, now that the Rams have brought in a young, offense-oriented head coach in Sean McVay, Goff said he’s taking to the new scheme much more easily.

“It’s a way different offense. Personally, from my brief experience with it, I’ve had a quicker time learning it – easier time learning it,” Goff said Monday, according to Myles Simmons of the Rams’ official website. “I don’t know whether that’s scheme or the way it’s taught or what not, but I’ve enjoyed spending time with the coaches and picking it up pretty quickly.”

Goff spent his college career in an Air Raid offense, so his experience with changing play calls, reading defenses, and working under center is limited. In McVay’s offense, Goff said the head coach has reduced the workload of his quarterbacks.

“There’s a lot of things that may have been on our plate before (that) aren’t now. But, there’s also some things that are. It goes back and forth,” Goff said. “Obviously, it’s still a tough position but he’s done a good job in the past and with me and Sean (Mannion) so far. He’s taken a lot off of our plate.”

While offseason praise may not be worth much once the season starts, McVay is pleased with what he’s seen from the former No.1 overall pick.

“I think he’s done a nice job just getting better every single day,” McVay said Monday. “We know that anytime you’re not truly live in some of these periods, it’s always a little bit more difficult. I thought he’s done a nice job managing the huddle, got in and out today. He’s seeing some things, progressing through based on what coverages we’re seeing.”
