NFL owners are expected to pass a proposal that would allow each team to bring a second player off injured reserve during the season, NFL.com’s Judy Battista reports.

Until 2012, no player placed on IR was eligible to return to the active roster that season, even if he’d fully healed. Beginning that season, teams were permitted to designate one player for return from IR. That rule was later modified slightly, as teams no longer must designate the player at the time they’re placed on IR, but rather when they’re ready to return.

The proposal for a second designated-to-return slot will be voted on at the NFL owners meetings next week.
