Houston Texans quarterback Tom Savage will likely spend the upcoming season looking over his shoulder, but he received a vital vote of confidence Monday.

Savage, who’s set to enter the 2017 campaign as the team’s starting quarterback, will be challenged by first-round pick Deshaun Watson every step of the way.

Although he hasn’t been viewed as an inspiring choice league-wide, J.J. Watt came to his defense.

“He’s had time to learn and grow,” Watt said, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. “He’s got a chance to prove what he’s got. That’s all you can ask for in this league: an opportunity. I think he’s embracing that chance this offseason.”

Watt said Savage is aware of the team’s goals and will respond to the challenge of leading the franchise back to the postseason for the third consecutive year.

“He’s working as hard as he can to be the guy,” he said. “Everybody around here knows what the goal is, what we have and what we can be. Now it’s a matter of going out and executing it. I think he realizes that. Obviously, we want to create something special here.”
