Hightower ultimately landed back with the Patriots on a reported four-year deal worth up to $43.5 million. Now, we might have an explanation for why the Jets’ interest seemed to wane, which opened the door for a reunion between him and New England.
The Jets initially offered Hightower a five-year, $62.5-million contract. After a physical, however, the team had concerns about his health, and it became clear New York wouldn’t give the linebacker the type of guaranteed money and total dollars it would take to land him, a source told Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.
Florio’s source added the concern wasn’t great enough for New York to drop out completely, and that New England knew about potential medical issues and was comfortable re-signing Hightower.
Hightower has only played a full 16-game season once in his career, and missed 11 combined games over the past three seasons.
