The New England Patriots are contemplating a trade that would send cornerback Malcolm Butler to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for wideout Brandin Cooks, sources told ESPN’s Dianna Russini.

The Patriots were already rumored to be among the interested parties as the Saints culled the market for interest in their leading receiver.

Talks may have changed Thursday, however, as New England is reportedly expected to land free-agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore – a move that could make Butler expendable for the right price.

Rumors had the Saints asking for either draft picks or a pass-rusher in exchange for Cooks.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports Saints head coach Sean Payton wants a lot for his third-year wideout, but the price may have changed to a “quality defensive starter” along with draft picks.

If the trade is consummated, it would mark one of the more notable player-for-player trades in recent memory.
